Shayla and I go way back, in the way that kids from small reserves do. I’ve always kind of known about her as she was best friends with my god-sister/cousin, who was also from Beardy’s. Then as I moved to Saskatoon, we saw each other more and more. Shayla has such a vibrant personality. She has this big, beautiful laugh and finds everything funny. It was a great experience working with her. The whole house shook with our laughter as we consulted on hair and make-up, as well as discussed men, babies and life.
From Shayla:
I’m Cree and registered with the Beardys and Okemasis First Nation. I’ve always lived in the Duck Lake community and my clientelle base is 80% Aboriginal. I’m very proud of that.
I graduated from Marca College in Saskatoon, SK in 2003 with my Cosmetology Diploma, as well as as Makeup Artistry and Application Certificate. In 2007, I became a Journeyman Hairstylist. My main focus has always been hair.
This past year, I started getting back into makeup application. The salon I work at, Impressions Salon and Gym in Rosthern, SK, is the first salon in Saskatchewan to get the Mirabella Professional Makeup line. It was launched in Canada 3 months ago. I’m hoping to become a makeup consultant with the line. If it doesnt work out, I’m still very happy with working with the new line. I’m always up for a new challenge!
It was my first time working with a MUA/professional hairstylist for a shoot, but I want to treat these personal sessions as the very best. To invest time, effort and tons of preparation into it. Shayla and I looked over my inspiration for the hair and makeup., we worked together throughout the styling to make sure that the style would compliment both Trudy’s and Char’s hair. Shayla would stop, stand back, adjust, ask my opinion and then we would continue on. It was great, as we made sure we didn’t lose time over mistakes or a styling step gone wrong. I would highly recommend her, and can’t wait for our next project together.
