giving back to the Rez, babeeee

I’m from English River First Nation.

My dad is Dene. My mom is Metis (now a Dene, as she married before Bill-c 31, for all you Native Studies people). I’m born and bred in the Boreal Forest and alongside the Churchill River. I love my Reserve. I love living in the North. I’m one of those happy weirdo’s but it took me a while to get to this point of appreciation for where I come from.

Anyways, giving back.

How can I, as a photographer, as a writer, give back to my reserve?

One of the ways I did it today was to donate a session to the Grade 12 Fundraising Bingo.

It’s pretty basic – a photography session plus all images printed as 4×6’s ($270 value, roughly). I really want to get images off disk and back into print so we’ll see how that goes.

I’m nervous and excited. Doing a donation is always pretty scary as it can go wrong in so many ways but I’m also pretty happy that I can do this. That I can take someone’s photos up here and give them something that they would normally not receive. And that I can continue to document the beautiful people and places from which I came.

How do you give back?
