I met one of my closest friends in Grade 12. She sat in the front of the class, actually paid attention and then went on her way. It wasn’t long before I was scrawling my phone number down her arm so we could hang out that weekend. In permanent marker.
It never would have occurred to us that we would be hanging out as bridesmaids in each other’s wedding (she was one of my Maid of Honour’s) and that we would get to have a fantastic and intimate celebration of her fifth year anniversary, celebrating a marriage full of laughter, joy and success with her husband, Leroy.
In these five years, they had two children. They lost a brother and a sister. They gained a niece. They moved from basement to apartment to a house. They went through vehicles. They started soccer games and ballet classes. They stayed up late talking about their future, walking the floors with their babies in arms, sat in ER rooms and sat in dark theatres, holding hands and sharing popcorn. They celebrated a full five years of some of the hardest struggles and some of the greatest triumphs.
They celebrated family.
They celebrated love.
And we rejoiced with them.
